Whether or not to take some time off work following embryo transfer is a question most women struggle with. Some women feel that they would like to take a week or two off to rest and some feel that if they stayed at home they would be going crazy by the second week of the dreaded 2-week wait. It is common for people to express concerns that if they didn’t take time off work and their IVF cycle failed that they would blame themselves for not taking the time to relax. Some ladies feel that distracting themselves at work would mean they wouldn’t be dwelling on negative emotions and every little twinge.

Just like the conundrum these women face, the answer on whether to take time off post embryo transfer is far from clear-cut. In fact, there is no RIGHT answer!

The best advice is to listen to what your body is telling you post-embryo transfer. If you feel physically or emotionally drained, take some time off. If you are feeling pretty good, carry on working but keep listening to your body and if your energy levels change have a duvet day or two.

There are a few do’s and dont’s that will help you post embryo transfer:

Avoid:

• Lifting heavy objects
• Excessive exercise
• Drinking caffeine or alcohol
• Hot baths and hot water bottles on your abdomen
• Having sex – be guided by your doctor as to when you can resume intimacy with your partner

Enjoy:

• Gentle exercise such as walking
• Drinking plenty of water
• Laughter, music and you time
• Relaxation techniques such as meditation or a good book.

The key is to listen to your body, don’t push your self too hard but also don’t live in a bubble. It’s important to keep a healthy balance in your life during your two-week wait.
